Nick Senske is a co-founder of the Computation + Construction Lab and the coordinator of the second-year undergraduate studios. His work applies research and methods from computer science and education to improve how architects learn computational methods and apply them in their designs. It also draws from these cross-disciplinary connections to examine issues of access and equity as they relate to architects’ engagement with technology. Senske’s contributions create impact by improving computational design pedagogy and the integration of computation into beginning design curricula, fostering gender equity and the democratization of technology, and leveraging advanced computation and construction processes to engage local communities in Iowa.
Before coming to Iowa State, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he helped launch and assess a new architecture curriculum that integrated computational design with traditional subjects. His YouTube channel hosts a variety of lectures and tutorials on computation and design communications and was cited by ArchDaily as one of the Top 10 YouTube channels for architects in 2016.
