"An Attempt at Preserving a Memory" (16"x20", oil on canvas), by Scott Martinson.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Iowa State University Design West artist-in-residence Scott Martinson will share new work at an event from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday, Sept. 4, at ISU Design West, 1014½ Design Place, Sioux City. He will give an artist's talk at 8 p.m., following by a live painting demonstration and electronic dance music party with DJ Bishop, Aaron Post and Benjamin Jackson.
Admission to the exhibition and artist's talk is free. Admission to the dance music party is $5 and guests must be 16 or older to attend.
Martinson will exhibit 10 paintings in both oil and acrylic on wood and on canvas, ranging in size from 16 by 20 inches to six by 12 feet. Titled "Impressions of Friends from the Near, Recent Past," the show will feature portraits of people Martinson has recalled from memory (blind personal abstractions), from live models and from photographs.
"This residency has allowed me to paint what I am compelled to paint, what is in my heart as opposed to commissioned work, which is driven by a client," Martinson said. "All of the paintings in this body of work were painted because I had a strong desire to re-create or preserve a particular moment in time. Each of these moments is very important to me. This exhibition is as full as I can get it with love."
Located in the heart of the city's Historic Fourth Street District, ISU Design West is a satellite facility of the ISU College of Design. From June through October, Martinson is using the facility as an art studio to explore projects that further his creative practice and connect him with the Siouxland community.
Design West artists-in-residence are granted non-living studio space, a materials stipend and a one-month exhibition at the end of the residency. They host open studio hours and are expected to organize at least one public program during their residency.
Martinson has held "art jams," poetry slams and live painting demonstrations at Design West to “serve as a catalyst in the art and music community of Sioux City […]. I have been able to meet so many artists and musicians […] who genuinely need to express themselves through art, like me," he said. His open studio hours the remainder of the residency will be on Mondays from noon to 4 p.m. He will exhibit the entire body of work developed during the residency in an exhibition from Nov. 1 through Dec. 1.
Martinson received an associate's degree in graphic design and web design from Western Iowa Tech Community College in 2012 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art from Morningside College in May. He plans to apply to a graduate program in art and aspires to teach painting and drawing at the college level.
