"We're Stronger Together" by Kelly Pullen was chosen for the 2015 Race for the Cure promotional campaign.
AMES, Iowa — Susan G. Komen Iowa has selected an Iowa State University graphic design student's project for its 2015 Race for the Cure campaign.
Junior Kelly Pullen of Shenandoah developed the winning concept, "We're Stronger Together," in the ARTGR 371 studio course this spring. The design features Polaroid-style photos of participants in past events with handwritten captions: "I fight for my sister." "I fight for my best friend."
"We were asked to create a campaign centered on what the race means to the people who run," Pullen said. "When I looked at photos from previous races on Facebook—the breast cancer survivors and their families and friends—they conveyed a real sense of community. That's where I got the idea for 'We're stronger together.'"
Pullen's theme "embodies who we are and what we do as an organization, and the committee believed it was the right direction for the 2015 race," said Derek Johnson, Susan G. Komen Iowa's special events coordinator.

This is the third year students in the studio have proposed ideas for Race for the Cure. The project is part of a short-term identity campaign assignment to promote and publicize an event, product or subject of a student's choice. Four students in this year's class worked with Susan G. Komen Iowa.
For the Oct. 3 Race for the Cure event, Pullen will produce three different posters, two postcards, a lapel pin, a billboard, two advertisements for the Des Moines Register, a survivor luncheon invitation and program, and a "Pink Honor Roll" t-shirt for those who raised the most money during last year’s fundraising event. To meet a course requirement not included in the Komen project, she also developed a phone app.
"I was excited to create something for a real client. It's not an opportunity we get very often in other studios, and it was a great experience to learn what they want and don't want and be able to to design within those requirements," Pullen said. "It's also a wonderful cause."
In addition to Pullen, students who developed designs for the Susan G. Komen Iowa Race for the Cure campaign were Ashley Enger, Johnston; Sydney Heppner, Clinton; and Kerstie Larson, Tipton.
Studio instructors include associate professor Paula Curran, senior lecturer Cheri Ure, lecturer Beverly Krumm and graduate teaching assistant Eric Andren, Waterloo.
