AMES, Iowa — Adam Carlson, Ankeny, will represent the Iowa State University College of Design as its student marshal at the university's public commencement exercises Saturday, Dec. 20, at Hilton Coliseum. His faculty escort will be Seda Yilmaz, assistant professor of industrial design.
Carlson will graduate magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Industrial Design and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
Carlson was on the Dean's List in both the College of Design and the College of Engineering for all four years at Iowa State. He is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. He also received the Roderick Seward, Flossie Ratcliff and Helen M. Galloway Foundation Mechanical Engineering Scholarship for 2011-2012.
While at Iowa State, Carlson completed three different internships for 3M in Minneapolis, Trek Bicycle Corporation in Waterloo, Wis., and Karten Design in Los Angeles. He played trumpet in the ISU Marching Band from 2010 to 2013 and served as a Cyclone Aide—an undergraduate student leader who facilitates freshman orientation and Destination Iowa State events—in 2010 as well as a College of Engineering tour guide in 2011-2012.
After graduation, Carlson will join Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Mich., where he will play a new role as a liaison between the automotive styling department and the wind noise/aerodynamics department.
Carlson is a 2009 graduate of Ankeny High School. He is the son of Curt and Lisa Carlson of Ankeny. His father and uncle, Dan Carlson of St. Paul, Minn., are both ISU engineering graduates. His late grandfather, Duane Carlson, studied farm operation at Iowa State in 1951-1952 before being drafted in the Korean War.
