Practical Experience

Internships are a great way to learn more about an organization or industry and develop valuable skills for use later in your education and career. Many employers prefer to hire graduates who have internship experience, which significantly reduces the amount of on-the-job training required.

Integrated Studio Arts
Integrated Studio Arts students are encouraged to seek internships to complement their academic studies. Recent experiences have included:

  • Artisan studios
  • Mueums
  • Galleries
  • Software companies
  • Publishing companies

Internships generally take place during your junior and/or senior year of study. Internships are not required; however, they provide students with valuable, real-world experience and can sometimes lead to employment opportunities.

Art and Design
Students who choose the Visual Culture Studies option are required to complete an internship during the spring semester of their junior year or the summer between their junior and senior year. Students often find internship opportunities related to their second major or minor, especially in journalism, advertising, and museum/gallery studies.

Students in the BA program frequently intern at:

  • Iowa State's Brunnier Art Museum
  • Octagon Center for the Arts in Ames
  • Des Moines Art Center
  • Jocelyn Art Museum in Omaha, Neb.
