The College of Design and Bioeconomy Institute at Iowa State University helped mark Earth Day on April 22 by announcing winners in the fourth annual Biorenewables Inspired Juried Student Art Competition. This event is open to Iowa State students enrolled in undergraduate integrated studio arts courses or graduate integrated visual arts courses. Submitted artwork must be made with recycled or renewable materials and/or depict the lifecycle of a resource.
"Old Land, New Purpose" (cyanotype, Van Dyke and watercolor) by integrated visual arts graduate student Naomi Friend, Sioux Center, Iowa, took Best in Show ($750). Other award winners included integrated studio arts juniors Guillermo Thompson, Ames, Iowa, and Eric Rolec, Waukee, Iowa, first place ($350); "Interwoven" (oil on canvas) by junior Ashley Hogenson, Muscatine, Iowa, second place ($250); and "Dust of Daily Life" (ceramics) by sophomore David Chadd, Coggon, Iowa, third place ($150).
The art will be exhibited in the atrium and administrative suite of the Biorenewables Research Laboratory (BRL) until April 2014, when the next juried show will be installed. The Best in Show piece, shown above, will be displayed permanently.
